Walling in and Walling out: Middle Managers' Boundary Work

Literature around middle management has highlighted the importance of intra-organizational boundaries, focusing on in-betweenness and fluidity middle-managerial roles practices. Yet, this literature largely focused crossing stable, monolithic placing less emphasis plurality emerging boundaries ways in which they are constructed. Focusing as outcomes of, rather than only constraints upon, everyday practices, we conduct an ethnographic study across multiple sites a Brazilian audit firm, examining managers' construction, maintenance adjustment boundaries. Drawing upon fieldnotes 155 formal interviews, our reveals how managers fluidly manipulate boundaries' visibility permeability to achieve specific purposes, different configurations these elements generate various boundary work describe barricade, façade, taboo phantom work.
